Roy Don Smith, age 84 of Edgerton, Kansas passed away Sunday, February 23, 2025 at his home with family by his side. Memorial graveside services with Military Honors will be held 1PM, Saturday, March 29, 2025 at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Roy Don Smith was born November 15, 1940 in Oklahoma City, OK, the son of Arlington Paine and Myrtle Eunice (McLaughlin) Smith. Roy grew up in southern Oklahoma and later moved with his family to Maryland where he attended high school. Roy joined the United States Air Force March 14, 1958, honorably serving his country during the Vietnam War. He served his country in two branches of the military, later joining the United States Army. His last service enlistment was in the US Army from 1977-1984, when he was honorably discharged. He was a disabled veteran but was always very proud of his service.
He married Brenda Jo Hughes on July 14, 1961. They shared 52 years of marriage before her passing in 2014.
Roy worked as a residential carpenter for most of his working years. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served his ward in many capacities. Roy was an avid gardener. He loved homesteading with his family and taking care of his chickens. He was most dedicated to loving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Has a generous and caring man with a servant’s heart.
Roy is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Lori Smith of Edgerton; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Cindy Smith of Baldwin City; daughter, Traci Hall of Oklahoma City, OK; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Adam Smith (1977), a grandson, Trey Smith, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
