Roger Johnston Obituary

Roger Clyde Johnston, age 77 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away, Friday, May 5, 2023 at Olathe Hospice House. Funeral services will be 10:30AM, Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the Wellsville Baptist Church. Visitation will be 5-7PM, Tuesday evening at Wilson’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow services in the Wellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.

Roger Clyde Johnston was born December 15, 1945 in Gardner, Kansas, the son of Wilbur Earl and Cleta Maxine (Barkley) Johnston. He grew up in Wellsville and attended the Wellsville schools. He graduated from WHS in 1963. After high school, Roger attended a business school in Kansas City and then worked Natkin & Co. doing accounting and other bookwork. In 1972, he began working for his parents at Hostetter’s Hardware. He worked there until it closed in 1984. Roger then took employment at the Wellsville Schools where was the custodian for 25 years until his retirement.

In 1974, he married Jackie Sleppy. They were married until 1990, and to this union, 4 daughters were born. Roger was a member of the Wellsville Baptist Church. He loved to golf and go to the lake to camp. He loved KU, The Royals, The Chiefs and spending time with his precious grandchildren. After his retirement, he did odd jobs and was known around town for being able to fix anything. His kindness and passion for helping others was a large part of the person that he was.
 

Roger is survived by his daughter, Teri Gardner (Jennifer) of Camden-Wyoming, DE; daughter, Cary-Sue West of Olathe; daughter, MeLinda Stanton (Richard) of Lenexa; daughter, Linzy Peterson (Matt) of Richmond, MO; son, Rod Courter of Oklahoma; daughter, Valerie Schendel (Jeff) of Olathe; daughter, Heather Smith (Steve) of Olathe; sister, Janice Samyn (Charlie) of Wellsville; brother, Ronald Johnston of Gardner; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
