Richard Ray Owings, age 74 of Wellsville, KS passed away September 7, 2018 at the Wellsville Retirement Community. Graveside services will be 12PM, Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Wellsville Cemetery with visitation 2 hours prior at Wilson's Funeral Home from 10AM-Noon. In Lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions may be made to the Richard Owings Memorial Fund in care of Wilson's, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Richard Ray Owings was born November 30, 1943 in Ottawa, KS the son of Ellsworth James and Wilma Berniece (Moore) Owings. He grew up in Wellsville attending Rock Creek School and later graduating from WHS in 1962. He joined the US Navy in 1962 and served 3 years. He also served in the US Navy Reserves and Air Force. On November 9, 1963 he married Barbara L. Kirkland at the New Hope Baptist Church. They were married almost 55 years until his passing. She survives at the home. Richard worked for GM and Ford Motor Company, retiring from Ford in January of 2004. After retirement, he worked for the city of Wellsville for a few years. Richard loved to travel in his RV and have coffee and visit with his local friends in Wellsville.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sonya Owings of Olathe; son and daughter-in-law, Darrin and Misty Owings of Baldwin City; brother and sister-in-law, Jerald and Judy Owings of Wellsvile; sister, Ida Owings of Wellsville; 5 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs Peanut and Penny. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roger Owings.
