Richard Jennings Bogert was born on August 12, 1938, in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Bernard and Margaret (Detrich) Bogert. He attended East High School in Kansas City, Missouri, and Spring Hill High School in Spring Hill, Kansas.

After graduating, Richard joined the U.S. Navy on February 26, 1956. He served honorably for 22 years and 12 days, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer. He was an aviation machinist, and his service included sailing on the USS Ranger, USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Yorktown, USS Bennington, USS Kitty Hawk, USS Midway, and USS Constellation. In 1975, he was assigned Command Master Chief of the Navy Fighter Weapons School “TOPGUN,” where he served until his retirement in 1978.

In June 1957, he married his first wife, Bonnie (Morris) Bogert. They shared 25 years of marriage. He later married Margaret Ruth Looper in August of 1988, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They shared almost 37 years together before his passing, and she survives at home.

Richard answered his final call of duty on June 8, 2025, departing this life with dignity and peace. He was not only a dedicated man but a steady compass for those who knew him—always ready with a story, a helping hand, or a quiet word of wisdom. His strength, humility, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Rest easy, sailor. Your watch is complete. “Fair winds and following seas.”

Richard was an avid Raiders fan who loved to tinker. He was a member of the American Legion, Louis Hanson Post #194, in Wellsville, Kansas, and the VFW #3788 in San Diego, California. More than anything and above all else, he loved and adored his family.

Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Curtis and wife, Brenda; daughter, Kimberly; daughter, Christina and husband Rich; step-son, Ovie; step-daughter, Gloria; step-son, Jeris; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Joe, and brother, Jerald.
