Katheryn J. Murphy, age 84, of Wellsville, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at her home. A private memorial service will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Wilson’s Funeral Home, Wellsville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Monarch Hospice House c/o Wilson’s Funeral Home, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Kathy was born Saturday, September 3, 1938, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Eugene (Gene) and Helen (Collier) Farrow of Waverly, Kansas. While attending Waverly Public Schools, Kathy was a cheerleader, played saxophone in the band, and sang in the choir and glee club. Kathy graduated from Waverly High School with the class of 1956. She attended the Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, KS for 3 years. She was united in marriage to Charles Rogers on January 26, 1958. They moved to Kansas City, MO followed by Big Spring, TX. In 1963, they settled down in Wellsville, KS and raised three children: Amy (deceased), David, and Stephanie. They divorced in 1988. Kathy then married Rex H. Murphy on April 6, 1990, at Wellsville, KS. The happy couple added Rex’s three children to their family: Vicki, Kendra, and Brett. Rex remains in the home.
Kathy was a former member of the United Methodist Church and worked as a legal secretary for a law firm, at a physician’s office, and a pharmacy technician in Wellsville for many years. Throughout her life, she was likely to be seen at her children’s and grandchildren’s events at school, volunteering around town, and serving others. Kathy enjoyed playing piano, painting, fishing, quilting, and traveling on both two wheels and four wheels. Rex and Kathy traveled many places with friends and family on Rex’s motorcycle. She was a fabulous cook and baker. Anyone visiting the home could expect a delicious dessert to be served.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Amy B. Rogers; great granddaughter, Ryka Cooper; and first husband, Charles Rogers.
Survivors include her husband, Rex Murphy; children: David Rogers (Kari) of Wellsville, Stephanie Mahler of Overland Park, Vicki Cooper (Chris) of Clearwater, Kendra Dwyer (David) of Wellsville, and Brett Murphy (Jensina) of Alma; brother, Steve Farrow (Nancy) of San Luis Obispo, CA; twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
