Janice Edna Whalen, age 81 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Friday, December 29, 2023 at her home in Wellsville. Graveside services will be 11AM, Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Wellsville Cemetery. Visitation will be at 10AM, 1 hour prior to graveside at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Wellsville. Memorial contributions may be made to Prairie Wind Hospice in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Janice Edna Whalen was born October 26, 1942 in Huntington Park, California, the daughter of Edward C. and Joyce E. (Porterfield) Slike. She grew up in Compton, CA and graduated from Compton High in 1958. After graduating from high school, she went to work at the Mayfair Hotel in Los Angeles, CA as secretary to the manager for several years. On November 21, 1964, she married Robert Wayne Whalen at the Presbyterian Church in Compton. They were married 59 years before her passing. He survives at the home. In 1979, they moved to Wellsville where Janice was a homemaker while raising their 3 sons. She worked in insurance until retiring in 1997.
Janice loved painting and art. She was an amazing mother and wife, a loving grandmother and will be missed by her family and friends.
Janice is survived by her husband of the home; son, Robert W. Whalen, Jr. and his wife Dawn of Wellsville; son, John W. Whalen of Wellsville; son Wayne E. Whalen and his wife Dawn of Olathe; grandchildren: Ryan, Rachael, Zachary, Kristina, Daniel, Joseph, Rebekah, Matthew, Aaron, Travis, Tiffany, Taylor, Brooke and Dayton; great-grandchildren: Jazlene, Paizley, Hadley and Grady; 2 brothers, James Belcher of TX and Barry Johnson of CA; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Richard Johnson and Charles Slike; and her great-grandson, Brex Whalen (2016).
