Hershel Ray Poor, age 93 of Wellsville, KS passed away Thursday, February 29, 2024 at his home. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held 5-7PM, Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Milestone Events in Wellsville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Veteran’s Community Project of KC in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Hershel Ray Poor was born September 18, 1930 in Stillwell, Oklahoma, the son of Samuel Henry and Arlene Bertie (Capps) Poor. He grew up in Stillwell where he attended school to the 8th grade. He began working that year and at the age of 17, he joined the Oklahoma National Guard. He was called up to active duty and served his country during the Korean Conflict in the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army. On July 3rd, 1952, he was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant First Class of the Company “I” 279th Infantry.
In 1953, Hershel married Judith Ann Gwinn and to this union, three children were born: Robert Raymond, Mark Samuel and Brenda Charlene. They later divorced.
On September 9, 1973, he married Marilyn June (Heath) Reynolds. They were married for 51 years before his passing. She survives at the home in Wellsville.
Hershel was a professional lithographer from 1953-1989 and then worked as a master carpenter until he retired. His remaining years were spent on his small farm outside of town in Wellsville.
Hershel is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; son, Robert Raymond Poor (Sophie) of Mustang, OK; Mark Samuel Poor (Julie) of KCMO; daughter. Brenda Charlene Poor of Shawnee, KS; 5 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenny Poor, of OK; brother Cliff Poor of OK; sister, Sharon Poor of OK; and sister, Wanda Wymer of Merriam, KS; he is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ann Winchester.
