Gerald Bynum Obituary

Gerald Lee Bynum, age 80 of Olathe, formerly of Newton, Kansas passed away Monday, December 2, 2024 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10AM, Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Wellsville with visitation prior at 9AM. Interment will follow services at 2:30PM in the Lyon’s Municipal Cemetery in Lyon’s, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 48, Wellsville, KS 66092, for the family to designate at a later date.

Gerald Lee Bynum was born September 23, 1944 in Chase, Kansas, the son of Glen Lee and Edna Earlene (Smith) Bynum. He grew up in Chase and graduated from Chase High School in 1962. He graduated from Drafting school in Wichita and later received an Associate’s Degree from NCCC in 1999.

On July 24, 1971, he married Kathleen Ann Rumback in Hutchison. They were married 49 years before her passing June 10, 2020. He later reconnected with his childhood friend, Barbara Haxton, and together they enjoyed the last 3 years of close companionship before her passing in August of 2024.

Gerald worked in sales for Aeroquip and later for American Family Insurance, then worked as a cabinetry draftsman for Midwest Cabinets until his retirement.

Gerald loved rebuilding his 1971 and 1973 Mach 1 Mustangs and enjoyed hunting various birds. He was a skilled woodworker, designing and building beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. He competed in many black powder rifle shooting competitions and belonged to the Greater Kansas City Mustang Club for many years where he made many great friends and fun memories. He was a passionate and avid golfer and loved to play any chance that he could.

Gerald is survived by his children: daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca (Bynum) and Brad Oshel and their 3 children, Garrett, Wyatt and Carly of Wellsville, KS; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Hiromi Bynum and their children, Leesa and Luke of Hadano, Japan; daughter and son-in-law, Emilee (Bynum) and Jose Yepez and their son, Atlas of San Cristobal, Equador; older brother, Louis Bynum (Wilma) of Denver, CO; older sister, Eloise Mueller of Newton, KS; brother-in-law, David Rumback (Gretchen) of Wichita, KS; brother-in-law, Don Rumback (Karla) of Hutchinson, KS; brother-in-law, Bill Rumback (Ana) and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother-in-law, Earl Mueller and partner, Barbara.
