Ernest Calvin Shaffer...Cal to everyone who knew him, passed away November 29th, 2016 at Olathe Medical Center.
Calvin was born August 12th, 1932 in Homewood, Kansas to Arthur and Hattie (Finney) Shaffer. He was the 7th child of the home. He had five sisters; Georgia Fisher, Lois Blackburn, Helen Remple, Sarah Shaffer and Florence Reeves, and two brothers; William Shaffer and Benjamin Shaffer. Of the children, Benjamin Shaffer survives.
On May 10th, 1952 Calvin married Dorothy Fern Morris at the Franklin County Courthouse. They made their home in Princeton, Kansas where they purchased a $700 house and began their family. Their daughter, Debbie, with her husband, Jimmy Walker and Donna Osborne survive. For 65 years Dorothy and Calvin loved each other and laughed with each other. They were the best of friends and were a perfect example of how a married couple should be. They traveled and met many amazing people who would become lifelong friends.
Calvin worked hard his entire life. He was always on the lookout for jobs to do to bring in extra money for his family and his home. He has worked on a farm, hauled milk, junked and was always the first to lend a hand. He worked at Harry Smith Auto Supply and Montgomery Ward for many years before he and Dorothy owned and operated the Sinclair Station in Wellsville, Kansas.
Calvin was passionate about guiding and teaching youth and was one of the founders of the Williamsburg Wildlife Club. He was involved in the club for 25 years doing trap shoots, young hunter's safety classes and fishing tournaments. All of the grandchildren camped, fished and/or fell into that lake.
He is beloved by his grandchildren; Brian Wilson, Kelly Wilson, Elisa Collins, Robin Wilson, Ken and Jaime Thompson, Kim and Russell Toot, Carrie Gragg and Kandice and Travis Williams.
He is adored by his great grandchildren; Richard and Chelsea Wilson, Aaron Wilson, Troy Wilson, Sara Houston, Katie Evans, Demetrius, Brianna, Cody and Marci Thompson, Dawn Comstock, Alli Thompson, Levi Thompson, Daimond Williams, Nevy Gragg, Fisher Thompson and Dominic Williams.
He is cherished by his great, great grandchildren; Michael Houston-Nelson, Nathan Ingram, Karter Clifton, Brayden Wilson, Mira Wilson, Lilly Wilson and Soon-to-come-baby-Wilson.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Buffy Thompson and a great grandson, Luke Calvin.
He was a grandfather, a father and a friend. He taught us about life and asked for so little in return. His love of the outdoors will always be cherished by the ones that loved him to the moon and back. His love of family and friends will always be in our hearts.
Forever boondocking, our Papa...
