Edna Mary Meyer, age 97 of Wellsville passed away Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Wellsville Retirement Community, where she was well cared for for many years. Graveside services will be 11AM, Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the Melvern Cemetery with visitation one hour prior, also at the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church in care of Wilson's, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Edna Mary Meyer was born December 25, 1921 in Fort Smith, Arkansas the daughter of Phillip C. and Bertha E. (Cass) Davis. She moved with her family in a covered wagon as an infant with her twin brother, Edward to the Melvern/Lyndon area. She attended schools in Lyndon and graduated from Lyndon High School in 1939. After graduation she taught in rural schools for several years before joining the United States Navy in 1942. While serving in the US Navy she met and married her husband, James Meyer on September 12, 1945 in San Diego, CA. They were married 8 years and had 4 children before his passing in an automobile accident on February 26, 1953. After her honorable discharge from the US Navy in 1946, she received her Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Emporia State in 1957 and then her Master's in Special Education in 1965. She later received her Specialist Degree in Elementary Counseling in 1972. Edna was an elementary school teacher in many school districts in Kansas and Nebraska and taught for nearly 50 years before retiring. She had taught in Wellsville for 10 years.
She was a member of the Foster Grandparent teaching program in Burlingame, KS, The Eastern Star Helena Chapter of Topeka for over 50 years, was instrumental in starting the Head Start Program in Olathe and was an avid baker and gardener.
Edna is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Wanda Meyer of Rantoul, KS; daughter, Dorothy Lee Zimmerman of Sterling, Kansas; son, Edward Ralph Meyer of KCK; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Galloway of Carlsbad, NM; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers, Edward and Phillip, an infant sister, Eva, an infant daughter, Janet Carolyn (1950) and a great great granddaughter Harley Jo.
