Dennis Shields Obituary

Dennis B. Shields, age 80, of Wellsville, KS passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at his home. Cremation. Memorial services will be 11AM, Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Wilsons Funeral Home. No visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys Scouts Troop 63 or the Wellsville City Library in care of Wilsons, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Dennis B. Shields was born May 18, 1936 in Wellsville, Kansas the son of Elmer Roosevelt and Dorothy Irene (Bruce) Shields. He grew up in Wellsville and graduated from Wellsville High School in 1954. Dennis joined the United States Navy and served from 1953-1987, where he was a NATOPS instructor. He was honorably discharged earning the Vietnam Medal and the Armed Forces Medal. On December 7, 1957, he married Burndine Thorton in Wellsville. They were married 59 years before his passing. She survives at the home. Dennis was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service for over 30 years in Olathe and in Wellsville, retiring in 1984. He was a former deacon at the Baptist Church, a volunteer firefighter in his younger years, a member of the Wellsville Masonic Lodge, the Wellsville VFW, and the Wellsville American Legion. Dennis loved camping and fishing and was a member of a water skiing club that put on shows for many years.
Dennis is survived by his wife of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Robert Burns of Gardner; son Michael Shields of Wellsville; sister, Mona Murphy of Wellsville; 5 grandchildren, Amanda, Melissa, Amy, Ted and Conner; 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert L. Shields.
