Cleta M. Johnston, age 96, of Wellsville, KS passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Wellsville Retirement Community. Funeral services will be 11AM, Monday, March 13, 2017 at Wilsons Funeral Home in Wellsville. Visitation will be from 10-11AM, one hour prior to services. Interment will follow services in the Wellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsville Baptist Church, the Wellsville Retirement Community or the Catholic Community Hospice in care of Wilsons, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Cleta M. Johnston was born February 6, 1921 in KCMO, the daughter of Irby F. and Mima B. (Miller) Barkley. She grew up on a farm and in 1938, she married Wilbur E. Johnston. To this union, 3 children were born. Wilbur preceded her in death in 1994. They bought a farm South of Gardner and lived there 15 years before moving to Wellsville in 1953.
Cleta worked in Ottawa at H.D. Lee Companies as a seamstress from 1963 until 1971 when they bought Hostetter Hardware. She worked there until 1983 when she retired. She was a member of the Wellsville Baptist Church. Cleta love to read, crochet and embroider and will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Cleta is survived by her children, Janice and Charley Samyn of Wellsville, Ronald and Carol Johnston of Gardner and Roger Johnston of Wellsville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 3 sisters, Pauline Flippin, Nadine White and Normalee Schlotman.
