The family of Billy J “Bill” DeMoss of Baldwin City, Kansas is saddened to announce his passing on April 16, 2026 at the age of 96. Memorial services will be 2PM, Friday, April 24, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baldwin First United Methodist Church in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Bill lived a long life filled with laughter, service, and a deep love for his family. He was known for his warm spirit, his easy conversation, and his ability to find the good in people and in life.
He was born on January 16, 1930, in Parsons, Kansas, to Will and Vessa DeMoss. During the Korean War, Bill joined the United States Air Force, where he was trained in computer programming-skills that shaped his professional life for decades. His curiosity and engagement never faded; he remained active on his computer up until his passing.
Bill met the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Keeney, at a photography studio in Parsons where she worked, when he came in to pick up his official military portrait. After a whirlwind courtship of just seven weeks, they married on February 10, 1952, shortly before Bill was deployed to England. Together, they built a life centered on family, community and shared purpose.
In Independence, Kansas, Bill and Pat made a lasting impact through their work in childcare, including Bill’s role as director and self-proclaimed chef of Pat’s House Daycare for 10 years. Together, they helped care for and influence a generation of children in their community. Bill was deeply committed to service. He was an active member of the Jaycees, Lions Club, and the Methodist Church. He also volunteered at the Baldwin Public Library. He took particular pride in helping bring Kiddy Land to life at Ralph Mitchell Park and Zoo in Independence.
He was a social man who never met a stranger. Bill loved to talk, joke, and gently tease, and his sense of humor was a hallmark of his personality. He brought people together wherever he went.
In retirement, Bill continued to build strong friendships, especially through his regular coffee groups in both Independence and Baldwin City. These gatherings were an important part of his life, and he cherished the camaraderie-along with the cookies kindly shared by friends. Bill was a devoted supporter of his family. He took great joy in attending his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s activities, from sporting events to concerts and plays.
His faith was an important foundation in his life. He attended church regularly and was an active member of Methodist Men.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia “Pat” DeMoss; his granddaughter, Katie Sharp; and his son-in-law, David Turner.
He is survived by his three daughters: Pam Sharp (Glen Sharp), Cheryl Turner, and Regina DeMoss; four grandchildren: Glen Sharp III, Heather Lewis (Nathan Lewis), Will Sharp, and Zeke Turner (Kimi Reed); and two great-grandsons, Jack Lewis and Henry Lewis.
Bill’s smile, laughter and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
