Obituary for Vanita Lee Chandler

Vanita Lee Chandler, age 101 of Wellsville passed away Friday, January 18, 2019. Memorial services are planned for 1PM, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Wellsville Retirement Community with burial of cremains to follow in the Wellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Area on Aging or Juvenile Diabetes Association in Care of Wilson's, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Vanita Lee Chandler was born February 8, 1917 in McDonald County, MO, the daughter of Claudia (Baker) and Tom Tomlinson. She grew up around the Turkey Ford, Oklahoma area.
Nita Lee, as she was known, lived in the Wichita area where she had her own beauty shop business in her home for many years. After moving to Arkansas City, she worked and retired from the Traveler Newspaper.
Nita attended Cowley Co. Comm. College and graduated with her Associate’s Degree in 1977. She also graduated with high honors from the Washington School of Arts. She taught painting and drawing at Cowley Co. for 2 years and the Denton Art Center. Being an artist was always her dream. She belonged to the Central Plains Artists, The Brush & Palette Club, and the Walnut Valley Woodcarvers. She had exhibited and won many awards for her art. Along with painting, Nita loved drawing and woodworking, writing poetry, sewing, and baking. She loved travelling with family and friends and had a great sense of humor.
She was married to W. G. “Chan” Chandler in Yuma, Arizona in 1944. Nita moved to Wellsville to live closer to her family for the last 20 years and enjoyed belonging to many organizations including the Wellsville United Methodist Church. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Vanita is survived by 2 daughters; Sarah Jo Sturm of Wellsville, KS and Kay Poindexter of Chula Vista, CA; granddaughter, Janet Campbell (Richard Palmer) of Wellsville; grandsons, David Sturm of Wellsville, KS; Evan (Jeni) Sturm of Billings, MT; Mark (Terri) Poindexter, Los Angeles, CA; Jeff (Ellen) Poindexter of CA; great-grandsons; Cody (Leslie) Campbell and Conner Campbell; great-granddaughters, Christine (Mike) Kelso and Stephanie Sturm; 4 great-great grandkids, many nieces and nephews and her little beloved dog, Tammy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, Dottie, Wilma and Peggy, son-in-law, Bill Poindexter and son-in-law, Marvin Sturm.
