Obituary for Kenneth Sumner Rush

Kenneth Sumner Rush, age 95 of Wellsville, KS passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at his home. Cremation. Visitation will be 10-11AM, Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Wellsville followed by a graveside service at 11:30 at the Edgerton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsville High School Athletic Fund in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Kenneth Sumner Rush was born September 1, 1925 in rural Gardner, Kansas the son of John Henry and Charlotte (Sumner) Rush. He grew up in Gardner and attended Gardner High School. Kenny joined the United States Army in 1943 and served in WWII in the US Army Infantry 75th Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theatre. He joined because he had 3 brothers serving and although he could have deferred, he chose to sign up at the age of 17. He believed that it was just what you did for your country. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was a recipient of The Purple Heart. Before going overseas, he had met Jacqueline Iris Pritchard. They wrote to each other while he was serving in the war and when Kenny returned home, he asked her to marry him. They were united in marriage September 20, 1946. They moved to Edgerton, KS in 1950 where he spent the majority of his life. Jackie passed away in 1989.
Kenny retired from Hercules Ammunition Plant in DeSoto, KS. He was a member of the Gardner American Legion LeRoy Hill Post 19. Kenny loved baseball, football, golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard and hunting and fishing.
Kenny is survived by his daughter, Marie Hrabe and her husband, Donnie of Wellsville; daughter, Paula Wallis and her husband, Michael of Baldwin City; daughter, Charla Blundell of Paola; son, Kip S. Rush and his wife, Connie of Wellsville; 9 grandchildren: Dawn Whalen, Ryan Hrabe, Crista Wallis, Rick Wallis, Raechel Stephens, Darla Elliott,, Kyle Rush, Meghan Rylander and Nolan Rush; 16 great-grandchildren: Rachael McGivern, Ryan Whalen, Haidyn and Cole Hrabe, Megan, Wyatt and Weston Casey, Celeste, Faith and Brian Wallis, Malorie and Cooper Stephens, Judd Elliott, and Ember, Haven and Nova Rush.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers: Clarence, Cliff, Clyde, Wayne and Earl; sister, Maxine Strange; son-in-law, Don Blundell; and a great-grandson, Brex Whalen.
